I have been troubled by recent reports of Dr. Richard Lee's new publication, "The Patriot Bible". After reading the very good reviews by Dr. Gary Boyd and Polycarp (see links below) I am saddened that Dr. Richard Lee has fallen to this low. He was once a great Bible teacher, right up there with Dr. Charles Stanley and Dr. John MacArthur. Clearly that is no longer true. Sadly, it never fails to amaze me how sloppy some preachers can be with the Word of God and, secondly, with American history. If these people want to teach history then they should get a degree in history and get a job teaching at a school. On the other hand, if they want to preach the Bible, they should remain preachers. In my opinion, it is sinful for preachers to use the pulpit to teach American history (mainly when they get it so very wrong). Christians need to start studying American history by reading the primary sources and well informed historians who have studied the sources in detail. I would recommend books by historians such as Mark Noll, Joseph Ellis, Edwin Gaustad, John Demos, Harry Stout, Karen Kupperman, Theda Purdue, and Alden Vaughan, among others. David McCullough, Richard Brookhiser, and Nathaniel Philbrick have written some fine works as well. As Christians, we should stop listening to men/women who tell us what we want to hear and who twist history (and the Scriptures) to fit a political agenda.I would also like to thank Bitsy (Jack of All Trades) for bringing this issue to our attention.
